Army vet shot at least five times trying to stop Oregon shooter; hero dad to survive shooting on day of son’s birthday:

Mintz is one of seven wounded in the shooting at Umpqua Community College that left 10 dead, including the gunman, Chris Harper Mercer.

Mintz threw himself towards a classroom door to try to block the shooter from getting into the room, his aunt Wanda Mintz said.

The gunman made it into the room and shot him three times instead.

Mintz called out that it was his son Tyrik’s birthday and got hit two more times, according to his aunt.

Apparently the EMT’s managed to stop most of the blood flow before rushing him for treatment.

Fellow soldier Dakota Meyer, 27, the second youngest recipient of the Medal of Honor, tweeted a picture of Mintz giving a thumbs-up sign from his hospital bed. Dakota Meyer was engaged to Sarah Palins daughter Bristol.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal on September 8, 2009, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. Meyer is the second youngest living Medal of Honor recipient, the third living recipient for either Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan[2][3] and the first living Marine in 38 years to be so honored.[4]
